And I’ve turned to art, as a cathartic expression, a personal plea & rock steady statement. For many weeks I worked on this lady. As I painted, she became stronger, more solid, more badass, more certain—she’s not a cry baby (ha!) she’s loud and committed.
When Elizabeth Warren was told by Mitch McConnell to sit down and shut up—that’s what it was—as she read Coretta Scott King’s letter in the Senate…that was it for me. This lady was ready for total birth and she arrived this morning.
Amid ugly name-calling, alternate facts, downright lies, organized chaos/distractions, emoluments, fear mongering, hate, bullying and ignorance, I am reminded of who I am. While sharing my despair about this new normal, I was also reminded that sometimes we don’t rise up until we hit a place that shatters our complacency.
So look out hate-- we are the children of Vietnam protests, of speaking up, and so are our children. We are America and we persist. We resist. We rise.
Here’s to artistic expression. Hitting rock bottom. Finding common ground. Protecting our democracy. Being Change. Resisting.
May you find both peace and promise in your day and commitment to all that you hold dear—with the courage to speak truth when someone threatens to take away what is yours. Namaste.
